2006 AWGA Junior Girls Tournament
Junior Girls' Tournament Good
things come in threes for 15 year old Emma Lavy of
Fayetteville. She is the Class 5A and Girls Over-all
Champion and now she is the winner of the AWGA Junior Girls' 50th
Anniversary Championship. Miss Lavy won with a
three hole sudden-death victory over past champions Elizabeth Wells and
Mary Michael Maggio. Lavy moves on to compete in the U. S. Junior Girls
Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. (See results for tournament scoring)
Championship Flight 3-HOLE Sudden Death Play-off Immediately followed regular play At the par-4 10th, the first playoff hole, Wells sank a 25-foot par putt while Lavy and Maggio each missed birdie putts from inside 15 feet to force another hole. Wells ran out of luck at the second playoff hole, which shifted to the par-4 18th. Her tee shot came to rest just above a fairway bunker and she later mustered a bogey to bow out after Lavy and Maggio two-putted for par from 40 feet. Maggio, 15, the defending champion and reigning AWGA Junior Girls Player of the Year, would be the next to succumb at the third playoff hole, also played at the 18th. Instead of lagging the water hazard in the middle of the fairway, Maggio took driver off the tee and pulled her tee shot well left in dense trees. She needed a 240-yard drive to carry the hazard, which she had accomplished in Tuesday's round. Lavy hit the green in regulation from 165 yards back while Maggio was on the green in four. Lavy lagged a 20-foot birdie attempt 3 inches short of the cup before tapping in for the victory. By Beck Cross, ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE |
